Christian Service Program

Choose the right service project that fits your personality, gifts, likes. Respond to a need that you see. Do something that will make a difference for others; something that matters. Do something that will help you to be like Christ who came not to be served but to serve. What kind of service project is best for you? You need to consider what types of service work best match your personal characteristics. Below are several examples of type of service work.

• tutoring younger children or peers
• teaching in a parish religious education program
• working with mentally and emotionally impaired persons
• working with physically impaired persons
• doing chores for elderly persons in their homes
• visiting ill and shut-in persons
• working as on office assistant for a community organization with no pay
• distributing food to poor people
• working at a children's day-care center
• working in a political organization
• participating in an environmental clean-up project
• coaching an elementary school team at a local school without pay

Any service that is done with an agency or institution, or for a needy person, that meets with the approval of your religion teacher.

Acceptable agencies and institutions include:

• Churches and/or schools
• Agencies which serve children and youth
• Service to the elderly and aging
• Service to the poor, needy, disabled
• Service to the civic community
• Service to a non-profit organization
• Service to those in hospitals and health facilities

With the exception of the freshmen year, student’s individual service should be done with the same agency, institution, or needy person for the entire year.

• It is not doing what is ordinarily required or expected of a regular student at home, at a job, or at school
• It is not doing something for money, reward, thanks, or credit.
• It is not doing something to help family or friends
• It is not doing something for any for-profit business

Failure to Complete Service Hours

• If a student fails to complete their service hours for the year, their Religious Studies grade will be marked as Incomplete.
• Seniors will not be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies or receive their diploma if they have not completed all mandatory service hour requirements for each year enrolled at Bosco.

Although service projects are encouraged to be done during the school year, it is also recognized that there are many meaningful opportunities of service in the summer months. Summer service is acceptable. All summer service must be approved in advance by the student’s religious studies teacher before it is performed.
