Frequently Asked Questions

What is ESports?

Simply put, it’s organized competitive video gaming. The $160 billion dollar video game industry is expected to grow to $200 billion by 2023, according to Forbes that’s nearly two and half times the size of all the competitive sports industry in North America. Colleges today are offering an average of $4,800 to players and many are offering half tuition opportunities. Some successful streamers today clear millions of dollars for creating various layers of content each year. Esports is changing the way we look at video games and St. John Bosco is prepared for that change.

Is ESports really a CIF sport?

Yes. CIF has recognized the large growing world of esports and has implemented the CIF Esports Initiative which details how schools can create competitive esports at their school. PlayVS is the partnering company that organizes our competitions on the state and national level.

Who can participate?

  • St. John Bosco students
  • St. Joseph students
  • St. Dominic Savio MS (Ages 13 and up)

How will we play?

This year we will be exercising social distancing so we will be using a combination of Discord and Zoom from your home.

What do I need?

All players are responsible for having access to a computer or console capable of running the game title they expect to work with while being able to communicate with teammates and coaches in Discord.

Players will be required to log into discord at the designated times above. There you will listen to coaches and work on the macro and micro portions of your game ability. Players will be assessed and paired up to bring out their best while exploring new game metas to give them an edge in the Fall.

What game titles will we be working with?

  • League of Legends
  • Smite
  • Rocket League
  • Fortnite
  • Overwatch

Can St. Dominic Savio and St. Joseph’s really play on the Bosco team in the Fall 2020 season?

Yes! There are close to 4,000 schools in California. As PlayVS grows their league some schools are eligible to participate with their affiliated schools. Savio and Joseph’s are affiliated with Bosco. If a student is selected to compete on one of these teams, they will be representing their school on our roster.
