Marching Band
What is the St. John Bosco Indoor Percussion Ensemble and Winter Guard?
The Bosco Indoor Percussion Ensemble is a performance ensemble comprised of the drum line and front ensemble. The drum line is the marching unit of the group and is made up of snare, tenor, and bass drums, as well as a cymbal section. The front ensemble is the stationary unit in the group and features keyboard instruments such as marimba, vibraphone, and glock, as well as an array of concert percussion instruments (toms, orchestral snare drums, accessories, concert bass drum, gong, etc.) Also in the front ensemble is an assortment of electronics, from guitars to synthesizers.
Winter guard is the sport of indoor color guard. Modern color guard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, rifles, props, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. Color guards can be found in, high schools, middle schools, some universities, and also some independent organizations some of which are related to drum corps.

What kind of competitions does Bosco attend?
Much like how the marching band competes in Southern California & Orchestra Band Association (SCSBOA) events, we compete in a circuit called (ADLA) and (SCPA). You can find out more information on their website at sc-pa.org and americandrumline.org.
Where are the competitions held and how do the members get there?
What is the attire on competition days?
When we perform we are to wear the uniform that is used during the show. After the performance, students are to wear their school khaki pants and band polo shirt. This ensures that all students are matching and are representing both schools.
- Saint Joseph Students may wear: the band polo and khaki pants that can be purchased at a local retail store.
- Winter Guard Members: would wear their warmups provided during the fall season.
What are the member dues for Indoor Percussion Ensemble/Winter Guard?
The member dues for the 2015 season will be $550. I realize the money tight everywhere and I promise I will try my best to keep the dues as low as possible without going into the red. You are responsible for purchasing shoes that are $30. They are the same as last years and only new members need to purchase these. There are not a part of the band fees.
Are members required to purchase their own sticks/mallets?
How do I receive communication throughout the Indoor Percussion/Guard season?
All communication and information will be sent out through email via Charms. We always want for our families to be informed and email allows us to reach everyone quickly. Additionally, information such as the calendar, financial information, music pdf files and audio files, etc. will be posted here on the Bosco website.
- For all travel, a very detailed itinerary will be sent out as soon as the circuit (SCPA & ADLA) assigns us our performance time.
What is the policy on attendance and staying up to date with payments?
This is an activity in which every individual plays an extremely crucial role. The ensemble simply cannot perform at its highest level with people missing. Excused absences from rehearsal are granted for illness, school music events, recognized religious events, and death in the family. Documentation (in the case of illness, a doctor’s note and/or signed note from a parent/guardian) should be submitted at the next rehearsal. Only once documentation is received will the absence be considered excused. Additionally, a member missing an event must contact the Mr. Richard and their captain head as soon as they know they will not be in attendance. There are no excused absences from performances.
Penalties for members with unexcused absences and failure to pay will be handled by Mr. Richard/Mr. Fuentes. Penalties may include, but are not limited to 1) not being allowed to participate in rehearsal, 2) not being allowed to participate in a performance, 3) removal from the Indoor Percussion Ensemble.
Payments are to be submitted on time and in the same process which band fair-share is turned in – in an envelope with “STUDENT NAME” and “INDOOR PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE (INSERT MONTH) PAYMENT” and placed in the lock box in the band office. A five business day grace period is given before a payment is considered late.
Who do I make payments payable to?
There are numerous fundraising opportunities available through the band boosters. Students have earned their entire Indoor Percussion Ensemble tuition through fundraising before! Please look for fundraising information from the band boosters.
As always, please trust that you can speak with members of the band boosters executive board regarding any financial hardships you may be facing.
