2020-2021 REGIONAL CHAMPIONS

St. John Bosco has a long tradition of building athletic legacies.

The 2022-23 St. John Bosco Basketball Team added to the great tradition of the Braves Basketball Program with a historic season. The Braves advanced to the CIF Open Division Final for the first time in school history.  Along the way the Braves beat Top 10 Nationally Ranked Harvard Westlake on the road, and then St. Bernard in the Thunderdome to advance to the Championship Game. The Braves also qualified for the State Playoffs for the sixth year in a row, this time earning the #2 seed in the State Open Division Playoffs.

Soph Elzie Harrington led the Braves and earned Trinity League Player of the Year Honors.  He was joined on the 1st Team by Junior Jack Turner and Senior Xinyi Li. Soph Kade Bonam and Senior Delyle WIlliams were honored with 2nd Team All League Honors.  Freshmen Brandon McCoy Jr was named Trinity League Defensive Player of the Year.

This year's seniors will move on to the college level, where they will join 18 former Braves playing college basketball, led by Sandy Ryan (Tulane) Josh Adoh (Bucknell), Lamaj Lewis (Loyola Marymount) and Scotty Washington (Cal Baptist) who were recently joined by 2022 grads DJ Henry (Cal Maritime), Marko Kenz (Northwestern College) and Christian Estrada (Biola).

About Head Coach Matt Dunn

Coach Matt Dunn is entering his 23rd year as a head coach, and 9th year leading the Braves at St John Bosco. Coach Dunn owns a career record of 447-184, with 180 of those wins coming from his time at Bosco. He had previous coaching stops at St. Augustine High School in San Diego as an assistant coach, and then Head Coach at Villanova Prep in Ojai and Damien High School in La Verne. Some highlights of Coach Dunn's career include qualifying for the playoffs in all 22 seasons as a head coach, winning the first two basketball League Championships in the history of Villanova Prep, and winning the 2013 CIF Title and 2015 California State Title while coaching at Damien. In his time at Bosco, the basketball program has become one of the most consistent programs on the West Coast. The Braves have qualified for the prestigious Open Division in 4 of the last 5 years; The 2018 team advanced to the Southern California Finals, including 3 wins over future NBA Rookie of the Year Evan Mobley. The 2021 team led by current Division 1 guards Lamaj Lewis (LMU) and Scottie Washington (CBU) won the Southern California Regional Championship, only being stopped from the State Title due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Most importantly, Coach Dunn and his staff continue to send Braves on to compete at the collegiate level. There are currently 18 former Braves playing college basketball, led by Lewis and Washington, Sandy Ryan (Tulane), and Josh Adoh (Bucknell). They were recently joined by 2022 grads DJ Henry (Cal Maritime), Marko Kenz (Northwestern College) and Christian Estrada (Biola).

Coach Dunn met his wife Joy while studying Business Administration at the University of San Diego, and together they are the proud parents of Kylie(20), Justin (18), and Dominic (15).
