Health
Open to all high school students (Bosco & beyond) as well as middle school students who want to get ahead.
Health is a graduation requirement in the state of California, and starting this school year, all St. John Bosco students will take Health online through SJB Global. Health will cover topics important to teen health and lifelong healthy habits such as:
- Physical Health: nutrition, exercise, sleep, infectious and non-infectious diseases
- Mental Health: stress management, time management, study skills
- Spiritual Health: faith and service
- Social Health: relationships and communication
These topics are taught meeting state standards and from a Catholic point of view following the teaching and philosophy of St. John Bosco High School and the Salesian mission.
Spanish I
Open to Bosco students for remediation only. Open to all other high school students and middle school students who want to get ahead.
The state of California requires students to complete 2 years of the same World Language for graduation. Most 4-year colleges prefer 3. Starting Spanish in the summer is a great way to start meeting that requirement.
Spanish I is an introductory course with 2 semesters of content (semester A and semester B). Students will earn 1 full unit of high school credit, transferable to most high schools.
Course Description:
Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Spanish language and the richness of its diverse cultures. In the Spanish I course, you will learn basic grammar and vocabulary skills to help build your fluency and language proficiency. You will explore the culture of Spanish-speaking countries through engaging interactive games, videos and audio recordings and apply what you learn through written practice, listening and speaking exercises.
These topics are taught meeting state standards and from a Catholic point of view following the teachings and philosophy of St. John Bosco High school and the Salesian mission.
Course Schedules and Details
Health
Health
There are 5 times a year to take Health: once in the summer; two times in the fall; and two times in the spring.
It's a great idea to take Health in the summer before school starts to get it out of the way, but also if it is better for your family to take it during the school year, then try to sign up for it when the student is not in a sports season. For example, if your child plays a fall sport, then sign up for it in one of the spring sessions or the summer.
The class runs for 8 weeks and typically has 4 lessons a week. Students typically spend about 30-45 minutes a day to complete a lesson.
The class runs asynchronously - there is no specific time when the student has to meet with the teacher and other students. The class is flexible and students can complete their work at any time of the day. The deadline to submit work is midnight in the student's time zone. Since there is no live element, this class can be completed even during travel or when students have daily sports practice or games.
There is a live teacher who keeps an office hour every day there is a lesson, so if the student needs any help, they can email or call their teacher and get some help or clarification.
In a lesson, students typically read or watch a lesson, complete an assignment, participate in discussion forums with the other students in class, and/or complete an assessment. Students will receive personalized feedback from the teacher on their assignments and receive a grade report once a week.
Student and parent(s) will receive an email with information about accessing the class and orientation for online learning one week before the class starts.

There are 3 different options to complete the course online:
- In the summer, students can sign up to complete all of Spanish I (both semesters A & B) in 8 weeks. It is a very intensive class and students should plan to spend 2-4 hours a day on Spanish, M-F for 8 weeks.
- Students can also sign up in the summer to take the first half of the class (just semester A) in 8 weeks and then plan to take the second half (semester B) sometime during the school year. Students in the summer session should plan to spend 1-2 hours a day on Spanish, M-F for 8 weeks.
- The third online option is to take all of Spanish I online during the school year. In this case, students can either:
- Take two 8-week courses (semester A during one quarter and semester B during another quarter). 1-2 hours of Spanish per day, M-F for 8 weeks at a time; or
- Take two 16-week courses (semester A during the first semester of school & semester B during the second semester of school). In this format, students will have a lesson every other day, so the workload is 1-2 hours per day, every other day.

In a lesson, students typically read or watch a lesson, complete an assignment, participate in discussion forums with the other students in class, and/or complete an assessment. BEcause this is a World Language course, the students will listen to audio, watch videos and record themselves practicing the language.
Students will receive personalized feedback from the teacher on their assignments and receive a grade report once a week.
Student and parent(s) will receive an email with information about accessing the class and orientation for online learning one week before the class starts.
